My love for anything royal goes beyond the real world; it encompasses the fictitious world too! Not so long ago I featured The Selection Series here in my blog. I was swept off by the love story, and the gowns and palaces and the Prince. A friend (Hi Kara!) sent me a message and she said that if I enjoyed Kiera's Selection I might also enjoy Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen. I finished reading the book in less than 24 hours; maybe less than 12 hours actually. I couldn't put it down; not when I had no idea about what was going to happen next or what the plot was because I decided not to read any review beforehand. It was a complete leap of faith for me. Diving headfirst was suuuuuurely fun!

Red Queen//Victoria Aveyard
*SPOILER ALERT*
There were so many familiar elements in this story, so I didn't have to fumble around. To begin with, we have a kick ass girl for a protagonist. It is set in the near future (year 320 NE...the book offers no answers as to what NE stands for) in a place called the Kingdom of Norta. I guess Norta is still in planet Earth though, although I can imagine there has been some geopolitical changes over the years. The social status is divided into two: Silvers and Reds. The Silvers are the ruling class and they possess different superhuman abilities.  To name a few, there are telkies (use telekinesis), nymphs (control water), strongarms (superhuman strength), swifts (amazingly fast), greenys (can bend nature to their will), etc. The Reds in turn, since they do not have such abilities, have become enslaved.

RED QUEEN.. LIGHTNING GIRL
We have our protagonist Mare Molly Barrow, who is a Red from the Stilts. She thinks herself a no good and she picks pockets for a living. Her sister Gisa and her best friend Kilorn are both apprenticed so they don't have to go to war as soldiers when they turn 18. Three of her brothers are already fighting in the war and she is fated to follow the same path. In a twist of fate, her best friend looses his apprenticeship and in an effort to help him out, her sister also looses her prospects of an apprenticeship.  A distraught Mare goes to a local tavern and there she meets a boy named Cal. Despite trying to rob him of a coin, he acts kindly towards her and sympathizes with her life.

Things take a 360 for Mare on the next day when she is suddenly summoned to the Hall of the Sun (the palace) to serve the King himself. She arrives in time to witness the Queenstrial, an event where the Silver ladies of the different Houses show off their abilities in a bid to win the Prince's "heart" and in turn gets the chance to rule the kingdom someday at his side. She also finds out that the Cal she met at the tavern was actually the Crown Prince Tiberias the Seventh and heir to the Kingdom of Norta and the Burning Crown or yes, 'Cal' for short. She also sees the King Tiberias, Queen Elara (Cal's step-mum) and Cal's younger brother Maven. Cal, Maven and their father can control flame whilst Queen E can probe other's minds.

The last girl to present herself for the Queenstrial was Lady Evangeline of House Samos, a magnetron (controls metal). In her bid to show off, she tries to move the metal pipes and tips the boxes in the arena. Mare's life is endangered as she was inside one of those boxes and she takes a fall. Instead of just falling though, some sort of miracle happened. She produces a shield of lightning that cushions her fall; her uniform is singed but she was unharmed. She was seized by the sentinels and the vicious Queen Elara probes her mind and finds out that she is indeed a Red with Silver-like abilities. Evangeline is chosen as betrothed to Prince Cal and Mare is chosen for Prince Maven. Mare is given a new identity since King Tiberius couldn't stand to expose her as a Red who can call up a lightning. She became Lady  Mareena Titanos, long lost daughter of a former Silver general who died on the battlefront. She was "found and raised by Reds" and was unawares of who she was or what she was capable of until that fateful day at the arena. She earns the nickname "Lightning Girl".

"ANYONE CAN BETRAY ANYONE."
That is what I have learned for sure upon finishing the book. At first I thought Cal was nice for helping Mare find a job at the palace. As the story was unfolding it didn't appear to me that he cared enough for the Reds or that he didn't intend to give them the equality and the better treatment that they craved for. Maven was different. He expressed his desire to help the Reds. He also wanted equality for them. He sympathized with the rebels and together with Mare, arranged for some of the rebel attacks to take place at the palace. Even so, Mare was still torn between the two, especially that Cal expressed his feelings towards her. He even helps Mare to go on a visit to the Stilts when she was homesick. On her visit she finds out that one of her brothers, Shade, who was fighting in the war had died.

Mare makes some friends (and enemies) at the palace; Lucas Samos her personal guard and Julian Jacos, one of her mentors, was kind to her. Julian especially warns Mare with this quote, in reference to Maven. Julian also discovers that Mare isn't the only Red in history to have Silver-like abilities. There have been others like her before but they have all been killed. There were also others like her who were still alive and are also in danger of being found and disposed by Silvers. Mare entrusts this info to Mavey (how cute!).

The climax brings us to the middle of a rebel attack and in the midst of the chaos, Mare asks Cal to choose between being with her (and her rebel inclination) or waging war against the rebels. This is also the part where Maven shows his true color. All his efforts to help the rebels were for a show. He was just as vicious as his mum. Together with their other allies, they have perfectly orchestrated the downfall of King Tib himself, as well as his heir Prince Cal. Maven takes the crown for himself and tries to get rid of his brother and Mare.

Mare and Cal escapes, but it was a close call. They end up at the rebel's lair.

***

And I end up with my disappointment for even thinking that Maven was better than Cal. Big LOL. And I was like...this ending totally sucks. I know that there is a book two but this cannot be ending, it's just too sad. Voila! There was indeed a saving grace at the end. Mare's brother Shade, whom we all thought was dead, was actually alive. Just like Mare, he also has an ability - he's a teleporter and his enemies couldn't catch him because he, well, just vanishes out of thin air.

Words of wisdome from Prince Maven Calore. How nice.

I imagined Shade's comforting hugs to his sister as my own and if those warm hugs gave Mare the passion to keep on fighting, it gave me the excitement to read the next book. And if there would be a movie in the future, I am totally all for it. I love the fierceness of this book. It's like a mixture of The Hunger Games and The Selection, peppered with X-Men-like abilities of some of the characters.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from Victoria Aveyard.

I got me another package from Sample Room - the Philippine's first ever beauty and lifestyle sampling website. As always, it's nice to be able to get something from the mail. Ooooh! But before anything else, I'd like to say that this is the first time that I experienced delays in shipping with SR. At first I attributed it to the crazy rainy weather in the NCR at the beginning of August. But when three weeks has passed and my order still has not arrived, I knew I had to follow up. It turned out that my package was lost and all that but they acted quickly about it and it no time, these hefty babies arrived. And I'm not the type who gets put off with minor hitches. So no worries Sample Room. No love is lost. Now on to the quick reviews. ;)

PALMOLIVE NATURALS CREAM CONDITIONER AND INTENSIVE MOISTURE SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER
"Say no to dry and sticky hair that leaves you feeling conscious. Feel confident with hair that’s so magaan-soft, you’ll love to flip it.

Experience how it feels with Palmolive Naturals Intensive Moisture Shampoo – now with a new advanced formula. Combining the best of nature with science, it gently cleanses and moisturizes hair leaving it magaan-soft."
Price/Size: Palmolive Naturals Intensive Moisture Cream Conditioner - Php 95.20/180 mL
Palmolive Naturals Intensive Moisture Shampoo - Php 96.50/180 mL
Palmolive Naturals is probably a brand that we Filipinos have been familiar with since forever! The earliest memory that I have of using a Palmolive Naturals product goes back to my second year in grade school - that would have been 1995! I shampooed with it, I just forgot the variant though, haha! The Palmolive Naturals that we have today has been repackaged overtime and is endorsed by some of the most popular Pinay actresses. I got excited when I saw this bundle on Sample Room. It's great to be able to try the shampoo and conditioner variants because in general, related products are compatible and work better together.

Ingredients of the Palmolive Naturals Conditioner.
I have this dry and frizzy hair so I thought this Intensive Moisture variant would be perfect for me. It has Coco Cream and Milk Protein extracts for keeping the hair hydrated. I love how this shampoo and conditioner combo smells and how the scent lasts throughout the day. True enough it didn't make my hair feel dry or sticky. My hair felt soft and bouncy. It couldn't do anything about keeping my hair smooth though. I just have this naturally 'buhaghag' hair and I have accepted that fact a long time ago. Haha!

SKINWHITE CLASSIC WHITENING LOTION LIGHT FEEL SPF 10 AND SKINWHITE ADVANCED WHITENING LOTION SPF 20

It also combines Vitamins B5, B3, B6, C & E to nourish and moisturize the skin. And now with its Better Scent and Better Feel, SkinWhite Classic Lotion is truly BETTER THAN EVER."

"Experience the power of instant white! SkinWhite Power Whitening lotion with Advanced Tri- Power Technology ensures whiter skin in an instant."
Full-sized samples from SkinWhite! Woot woot!
Ingredients of SkinWhite Classic Whitening Lotion Light Feel Technology SPF 10. Price/Size: Php 72.00/100 mL
Ingredients of the SkinWhite Advanced Whitening Lotion. Price/Size: Php 123.50/100 mL
These two lotions from SkinWhite are truly a delight to use! In fact, I may have become a SkinWhite convert now! The Classic Whitening Lotion SPF 10 with Light Feel Technology caters to those who want a light weight lotion that gets easily absorbed by the skin. Having a lower SPF content, I prefer using this on days that I would just be staying indoors or when the sun isn't sooooo hot . The Advanced Whitening Lotion with SPF20 on the other hand has a richer and thicker formula but what I love about it is that it doesn't feel heavy or greasy. It is also easily absorbed by the skin. They are both very moisturizing and leaves the skin soft to touch. I wouldn't want to choose, I love having them both! ;)
Feel the texture, based on the photo. LOL.
The one on the left is the Light Feel lotion and you probably noticed that it is watery. It doesn't feel uncomfortable though when you put it on your skin. On the right is the Advanced Whitening Lotion; that's a creamy and thick formula minus the greasy feel.

There ya have it. The the total amount of the loot  is Php 387.20 but they all came free so I only paid Php 180.00 for the shipping. Amazing, ain't it?! They all came in full size, so I didn't have to shop for shampoo, conditioner and lotion. I'm one happy consumer. Plus I discovered  the gem that is SkinWhite. Sample Room truly gives every Filipina the "Try Before You Buy" advantage. Thank Sample Room!

P.S., Hubby also loves the SkinWhite Lotions, I have a feeling that he's been using 'em more than I have, LOL
We're in the year 2016 - that's three years after Yolanda ravaged the Philippines. We all know about how much of a deluge it was. So many lives lost. Too much destruction. I remember when the storm died down and I and my family went out of our home (what's left of it) and saw for the first time the unspeakable damage that Yolanda brought. "How do we rise up from something like this?", I thought. And we didn't even have the worst brunt. The Taclobanons and the residents other coastal towns in Leyte and Samar had it worse.

My home at San Diego, Burauen, Leyte a few hours after Yolanda left.
Flashback
On November 7, 2013, a day before Yolanda happened, the weather was gloomy but it wasn't even raining hard yet. Work and classes were canceled because according to the news, a very strong typhoon was coming and we all needed to prepare. The thing was, we Warays are kind of used to the idea of having typhoons every year, so some of us were easy to brush it off as "just another typhoon". Some of us actually prepared but since we have no idea of how strong a super typhoon could be, the preparations just fell short. Some of us were like me: was Facebooking all day. I've read on my timeline that said that the incoming typhoon's strength could lift a bulldozer. I thought it could also raise an eyebrow - mine. Apparently, there were so many others like me who didn't heed the warning.

It turned out that the warnings were true. Yolanda was unlike anything that we have seen in our entire lives. It was a nightmare and I prayed that nothing of its magnitude would ever happen again in our country. But there has been a juggernaut that entered our country every year thereafter; I've experienced Ruby in 2014 and Nona in 2015 and for this year alone, we've had at least 2 or 3 strong ones. And the year isn't over yet.

On Yolanda's third anniversary, I'm sharing some photos which were taken with our trusty digital camera, which luckily didn't get drenched or wasn't easily battery drained. I wish I'd taken a photo of my sister carrying those damaged GI sheets, just so we have an evidence of her strength when she is under adrenaline rush. But, here we are. :)

Lamp and electrical posts were down. A few weeks later, my sister and I took the time to touch the tops of the posts. Hey, it's a bragging right, being able to touch the top of the post, albeit a fallen one. ;)
Spot the big white clouds at the end of the road. There's going to be a great weather tomorrow. But how do we get to tomorrow with all of these? And how we dreaded the coming of the night. Photo taken on the afternoon of November 8, 2013.
My energetic grandma surveys the destruction. My brother may just be thinking about what we will be having for dinner. Wait, what?! We actually forgot about breakfast and lunch.
My high school, the Burauen Comprehensive National High School.

Must have been taken by my father, somewhere in the Palo area.

"We's havin'  a great weather", that's why my kid and my younger brother were relaxing on the floor. But remember....
...we still had no roofing.
We had our roof fixed about four weeks after Yolanda, just in time for the Burauen Town Fiesta. We wished we had a faster way to get things fixed but construction materials went scarce for a time., and well, it was just chaotic. After which, we took the baby steps towards the "pagbangon" or "pagtindog" process. We did whatever we could to have a nice Christmas and New Year, not without stories about Yolanda to keep us on our toes. We knew we would be talking about her for years and years to come. No matter how badly things went, Yolanda still brought out the best in us. There will be stories of bravery and courage, along with those that bring tears to our eyes. And that particular night when just about everyone I knew (and thousands more that I didn't) evacuated to higher ground for fear of a tsunami; that one was dangerous. But admit it, it was also funny from one perspective.

We've come a long way from November 2013. We've risen up from the ashes. But I think we still have a long way to go. There is the issue of Climate Change and how it mainly affects us.

This is in remembrance to all of those whose lives were lost. This is also in gratitude to those  who made great sacrifices to help their fellowmen.

Tin adds the finishing touch to our tree. December 2013
P.S.
I wish I'd found a way to  keep my post-Yolanda weight. (!,!)
I grabbed this lippie a long time ago. Honestly I can't remember when, LOL. So I guess it's about time that I make a review. These photos were also taken using my camera phone waaaaaaaay back so the quality isn't that good. Apologies for that. But anyway, hewego!

The other colors in this ColorCreme line. Photo taken from www.humanheartnature.com
My Take
I've been trying out different Human Heart Nature products and of course, being the makeup junkie that I am, I also checked out their Mineral Makeup line. I had six color choices for the lipsticks and since I was looking for an MLBB (My Lips But Better) type, I opted not to choose the Lucky In Love (Red Brown), Crimson Glaze (Brick Red) and Pink Smoothie (Light Pink). I am also slightly averse to coral-ly colors so that left me with the Rose Mauve color which is named Passion Candy.

The lip bullet is of slim type, reminiscent of a Wet n Wild Matte Lip Cover, but in my opinion is packaged sturdier and the cover isn't made of acrylic. I like the packaging because it looks classy and closes to a snap so there won't be any bag incident where the cover would come off.

I bet you can see on the shape of the lip bullet is slim and cylindrical with a slightly diagonal tip. I have a hard time applying it directly from the tube because it can't seem to get it around the shape of my lips so I always use a lip brush in applying this. I also use my fingertips in applying this for a more natural effect.

If I were to describe the smell of this one, I think it smells a bit like milk and oatmeal; nothing overwhelming so it's one thing I love about this lippie. The name is ColorCreme so it's really creamy in texture, maybe a bit sticky but not to a bothersome level. It glides on creamily and I think the nourishing ingredients such as cocoa butter, sunflower seed oil, passion fruit seed oil, and natural vitamin E are doing their jobs in keeping the lips hydrated.

Ingredients. It's a white box but just got a bit dirty haha.
As for the color, I think it is a perfect match for natural color of my lips which is a bit dark. It is mauve but when I look at it on my lips, it has a reddish-brown undertone. I wish it had a more brightening effect on my face because I think I look a bit dull wearing it. I think it's a great color for everyday at the office.  With one layer and just dabbed with my finger it's perfect for the no makeup look. If layered a bit, it will be darker and it looks brown and vampy.

Swatched on the back of my hand.
The staying power is probably the negative aspect  of this lippie. Since it is not a matte lipstick I think it's quiet understandable. It literally melts as I brush it with my lip brush.I think it only stayed for about three hours on me; it leaves a reddish stain afterwards. At least it is non drying. Anyway, there are ways to extend the staying power of a lipstick on the lips, as indicated in the leaflet that came with it.

The lipstick came with a little leaflet that contained some infos and tips about lipsticks and application.
Here's a  photo of me wearing the bespoken Human Heart Nature Mineral ColorCreme Lipstick. Looks like I'm not wearing anything at all, ayt? I also have here the before and after color of my lips. Told you it's almost the same color as my natural lip color.

To cap things...
If you are looking for a lipstick that would give you a natural, no makeup makeup look I think you could go for this one. There are other options for color choices. Those who would like to give their lips a rest from drying or matte lipsticks would also love this because of its moisturizing properties. Plus it's from Human Heart Nature so you're getting a 100% Natural product which is also free from harmful chemicals. They also don't test on animals.
