"Reputation" drops next week and so far Taylor has released four tracks from the said album - Look What You Made Me Do, Gorgeous, Ready For It, and this one, Call It What You Want. So how's it lookin'?

TBH, I may have found my favorite Reputation song yet in Call It What You Want. I needed this song and it just came at the right moment. I cry rather easily and by the time I reached the chorus while listening to it for the first time, I was tearing up. I had to hide a bit 'coz I was doing YouTube at the office and it ain't cool if I get spotted with wet eyes while watching Taylor. Wow! She hit home. It won't top State of Grace for being my most favorite Taylor Song but it's right up there.

We live in a crazy world and it renders us unnerved sometimes. It becomes more bearable if you have someone who's got your back. I was thinking of my husband while listening to this song and I realized I don't thank him enough for being there for me. And yeah, the tears just came.

Here's the lyric video and the lyrics to Taylor Swift's Call It What You Want.

[Verse 1]
My castle crumbled overnight
I brought a knife to a gunfight
They took the crown but it's alright
All the liars are calling me one
Nobody's heard from me in months
I'm doing better than I ever was

[Chorus]
Cause my baby's fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I'm the one he's walking to
So call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to
My baby's fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I'm brand new
So call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to

[Verse 2]
All my flowers grew back as thorns
Windows boarded back up after the storm
He built a fire just to keep me warm
All the drama queens taking swings
All the jokers dressing up as kings
They fade to nothing when I look at him
And I know I make the same mistakes every time
Bridges burn, I never learn
At least I did one thing right, I did one thing right
I'm laughing with my lover
Making forts under covers
Trust him like a brother
Yeah you know I did one thing right
Starry eyes sparking up my darkest night

[Chorus]
Cause my baby's fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I'm the one he's walking to
So call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to
My baby's fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I'm brand new
So call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to

[Bridge]
I want to wear his initial on a chain around my neck
Chain round my neck
Not because he owns me
But 'cause he really knows me
I recall late November
Holding my breath, slowly I said "you don't need to save me
But would you run away with me?"
Yes

[Chorus]
My baby's fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I'm the one he's walking to
So call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to
My baby's fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I'm brand new
So call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to

[Ending]
Call it what you want, call it what you want
Call it what you want, call it what you want
Call it what you want, call it what you want
Call it what you want, call it what you want
Call it what you want yeah, call it what you want to

And am I such a loser for belatedly discovering this song? Well, better late than later. Right? Drops of Jupiter...it's lovely. It has received some accolades (two Grammies!). It's almost old enough to vote (recorded in 2000). It made me want to pick up a guitar; something that I haven't done in forever. It's not like I still know how to play it, but still.
I discovered it through Taylor Swift. Yes, that girl again.

So it goes, Taylor dropped Gorgeous over the weekend and I realized, just like the world over, that the Old Taylor is not dead after all. I decided to watch the Old Taylor via a copy of the Speak Now World Tour. Then I got to the part that I usually skipped, the one where she sit's under a "tree", wearing a purple dress, singing and playing the guitar. I decided not to skip this part this time and boy was I surprised. And I was like,  "so this is Drops of Jupiter".

I could only catch fried chicken through Taylor's rendition so I immediately consulted Google. Here's what I got. And gosh, some people may not like wordy stuff or they haven't got the time to analyze it but this is exactly my thing!

DROPS OF JUPITER (TELL ME)
Now that she's back in the atmosphere //With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain //Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon //She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

Tell me, did you sail across the sun //Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated //Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star
One without a permanent scar//And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Now that she's back from that soul vacation //Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo //Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey
Now that she's back in the atmosphere //I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet//Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the milky way//And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find// And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken //Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance //Five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had, and me

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet //Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way
And are you lonely looking for yourself out there?

Tell me did you sail across the sun //Did you make it to the milky way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated
Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star//One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Of course, I have a thing for dissecting lyrics and I discovered through numerous online discussions that Pat Monahan wrote this after loosing his mom. Like saying he haven't really lost her and that she just vacayed throughout the Galaxy and now she's back with "drops of Jupiter" in her hair, and he wants her to talk about all the adventures in the outer space.
But we could only imagine her answer, right? Maybe that's the painful part. 😔
But you would also notice that the lyrics seem to have references to different people.
It could be about someone who was in a relationship but decided to take some time off.
It could about your best friend, whom you were always in love with.
It could be about any important person in your life.

I love this song for it's lyrics but when I think about it, I hope to never loose someone so dear that I would be singing this song with tears in my eyes. Quiet impossible too, though. If life must run it's due course. Anyway, let's not think about that.

Meanwhile, here's the bespoke rendition of Taylor Swift of Drops of Jupiter, straight out of YouTube. Credits to the owner.
